Rules and Procedures

Attendance
In compliance with California state law, GHA requires students to complete 175-180 educational days annually. We monitor attendance to ensure these standards are met while offering flexibility for families. If parents choose to take additional time off outside of the official calendar, students must complete all coursework during their absence to remain on track.
Regarding illness, students are granted one extra day per day of absence to submit missed assignments without penalty. A medical note is recommended for absences exceeding three days. For non-medical absences, work must be finished during the time away; otherwise, students may fall behind and be required to extend their school year to fulfill state mandates.
Behavior & Respect
We maintain a culture of mutual respect. Inappropriate language, bullying, or disruptive behavior is not permitted in any GHA setting, including online spaces.
Homework & Assignments
Students are responsible for tracking due dates, completing assignments with integrity, and asking for help when needed. Parents are encouraged to provide structure and accountability at home. See Homework Policy in the GHA Parent Student Handbook.
Technology Use
Digital tools are an important part of GHA's curriculum. Devices should be used for learning purposes only, following family guidelines and any additional GHA expectations.
Homework Policy
Homework is a vital means by which students can better learn the required material in each curriculum area. The prime responsibility of homework belongs to the students themselves. Teachers and parents also play an integral role in a successful homework experience. Active parent communication (with child and teacher) is essential throughout the homework process.
Purpose of homework
At the grade and middle school level, the purpose of homework
-
provides an opportunity for students to review and practice what they have learned in class, helping to solidify understanding and improve retention.
-
develops important skills such as time management, organization, and self-motivation, which are essential for future academic success.
-
can provide a valuable opportunity for parents to become involved in their child’s education, stay informed about their progress, and support their learning at home.
At the high school level they include:
-
Practice/Guided Notes/Review – to reinforce and master essential skills already presented in class.
-
Labs/Resources – to provide students with opportunities to transfer specific skills or concepts to new situations.
-
Application/Off-line Activities – to enable students to connect skills and concepts to new situations.
Types of homework
Types of homework include, but are not limited to:
-
Nightly assignments for practice or review of classwork
-
Review for tests or exams
-
Research activities
-
Reading and writing assignments
-
Projects
Time Guidelines
-
Students are expected to complete homework by the assigned due date.
-
If a student is absent from school due to illness or another legal reason, the student is expected to complete the assignment according to teacher guidelines. He/she will have (1) day per each day absent to complete the work.
-
*There is usually no Homework assigned over weekends or extended vacations unless the student is behind in a given subject area.

Parent/Student/Teacher Responsibility Policy
Parent Responsibilities
Parents play a valuable role in the homework process. Their communication, guidance, and support of their son/daughter are essential if the value of good homework practice is to be realized.
The parent should –
-
Encourage good homework practice. Assist them in organizing their commitments and establishing a definitive time and place to do homework.
-
Assist with homework, when necessary, not initially. Let the son/daughter know that assistance is available if requested after they have attempted to do it independently. DO NOT be tempted to do the for child.
-
Provide a quiet area conducive to doing homework assignments.
-
Communicate with teachers when the parent feels the homework might be too difficult or too much or cannot be completed due to extenuating circumstances. Discuss this openly with the teacher and the son/daughter.
-
Encourage the students to seek help from parents or Text the teacher (951-217-8990) directly when the student is having difficulty.
Student Responsibilities
All students are expected to understand the importance of homework and be responsible for complying with each teacher’s guidelines.
The student will –
-
Take responsibility for getting all assignments.
-
Make every effort to complete each homework assignment to the best of their ability.
-
Seek help from the parent/teacher if they do not understand an assignment or have difficulty completing homework.
-
Complete assigned work. Homework is the responsibility of the student, not the parent, sibling, or other party. Homework is “practice,” and the benefits of doing it well will be reaped at assessment times.
-
Record homework as it is assigned.
-
Read and follow the policy against plagiarism.
Teacher Responsibilities
Teachers have the autonomy to assign homework to their students based on what they believe will best assist them in their educational program. For high school, the wide range of courses offered, the various levels of courses, and the diversified curricula are the reasons for this autonomy.
There are, however, specific procedures that all teachers, regardless of curriculum area, are expected to adhere to concerning homework. These include the following items:
• A description of the various homework assignments a student might expect
during the course.
• The teacher will give the date each assignment is due.
• The average amount of time a student might need to complete the different
types of assignments.
• The procedure for turning in assignments late, including any penalty.
• The expected format of the assignment, e.g., medium to use, material, bibliography required, research style, etc.
